[Excerpt] There are many reasons why Linux dominates the HPC space. Academic and research communities have found that the open source development model creates a high-performance operating system that is stable, secure, and often leads the way with innovative features. In addition, commercial users have found Linux to be both high-quality and low-cost when compared to traditional proprietary operating systems. This of course appeals to IT departments faced with constrained budgets.
